Tilt

Founded in 1998, TILT (Teaching Intermedia Literacy Tools) has been part of the Ninth Street Independent Film Center community since 2003. TILT collaborates with schools, community-based programs, and individual youth to teach young people the fundamentals of moviemaking and media literacy. Through a combination of technical training and hands-on experience students are encouraged think critically about media and to create their own alternative messages.

DEEPER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
TILT creates a supportive learning environment in which youth are empowered to make their own creative decisions and complete their own movies. They become media literate by engaging critically with the media; learning to work collaboratively as a team; strengthening verbal, written and organizational skills; becoming comfortable with digital technology; creating a high quality final movie for a portfolio.

CORE VALUES
Teach media literacy and critical thinking through story development and hands-on video production.

  • Provide a student-centered, experiential learning environment in which youth have creative ownership.
  • Encourage youth to use media as a tool to express the perspectives and concerns unique to them.
  • Tell stories that speaks to a variety of communities.
  • Emphasize collaboration and communication.
  • Work with populations who might not otherwise have access to the tools of media production.
  • Provide ongoing support for young filmmakers.

TILT facilitates workshops with notable community partners such as Frameline (Generations Workshop), San Francisco Women's Film Festival, the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, and many more.
